2 Signs Your Roof Needs Repaired

2 Minutes Posted on:

Different types of roofs have different projected lifespans, and how long your roof lasts without requiring repairs will depend on how well it's maintained and where you live, as areas prone to high winds and high levels of salt in the air can cause damage and corrosion to some roofs. A roof in need of repair should be dealt with as soon as possible, as a damaged roof can damage the structure of your home, lessen your home's energy efficiency and lead to additional costly repairs. Read on to learn about two signs your roof needs to be repaired.

Mould And Dampness

When you think of a leaking, damaged roof, you may think of water gushing in through your ceiling each time it rains while you run around locating buckets. These types of severe leaks do occur, but so do more subtle leaks that are harder to spot. Small leaks may simply dampen the upper layer of your ceiling each time it rains, and you may not actually see any water coming through your roof. Without being repaired, small leaks tend to become bigger leaks that do penetrate the ceiling, but there are tell-tale signs that you have a leak and require some repair work on your roof. Mould and dampness in your home, particularly if it seems to develop from nowhere, can be signs of a leaking roof. This is particularly true when mould and dampness appear on your ceiling or on the upper part of your wall, but as a leaking roof increases the moisture levels in a house, dampness can appear anywhere. Dampness and mould have been associated with health problems, including the development of respiratory conditions.

Sagging Areas

A strong roof in good condition should not sag anywhere. If you look up at your roof and notice any section of it is sagging, you have a problem. Sagging can indicate deterioration of the roof rafters, and when roof rafters are compromised, there's a risk that the affected section of your roof could collapse. A sagging roof should be thoroughly inspected and the damaged roof rafters should be replaced, as a weakened structure can allow moisture into your roof space. This isn't as big a job as you may think, and your roofer will do their best to ensure all materials removed to access and replace the roof rafters are replaced.

If you have concerns about the condition of your roof, or if you'd like a roof inspection for peace of mind, contact a roof repair company to have your roof assessed.
