Gutters are a vital part of your home's defences against rain. You probably know that any problems with them should be addressed as soon as possible, but you may not know if they can be repaired or should be replaced completely. Here are some signs that the gutters will need to be replaced.
Numerous leaks
A small hole in your guttering can probably be patched without the need for any further intervention. It's more of a problem if there are lots of leaks throughout the length of the gutters. In theory, the individual holes could all be repaired, but in practice, this would be time consuming and expensive. It would also not address the fact that your old guttering may just be prone to damage and could develop more problems in the future. In this case, it may be simpler to have them replaced rather than repaired. This is also true if the leaks are large — the bigger the area that has decayed or split, the harder it will be to mend it with a single seal.
Sections coming apart
This is another issue that can be repaired provided the problem isn't too great. One or two sections that have come apart can probably be securely fixed together. On the other hand, you may find that your guttering doesn't stay connected no matter how carefully you fix it. You will then probably find it easier to replace the guttering with a single seamless gutter that doesn't come apart in the first place.
Hangers coming off
Hangers that come away from the walls may just need the screws tightening; at worst, you may have to drill some new holes or replace some of the hangers. If your fascia boards have rotted, however, you will find it impossible to keep the screws in place no matter how much you tighten them. You will then need to have the boards repaired and the guttering replaced.
Buckled gutters
If your guttering has become dented or buckled, perhaps from damage by flying debris, you will not be able to knock it back into shape. In order to prevent further damage and to protect your home from damp, you will need to replace at least that section of gutter.
The best way to find out if you need to replace your guttering is to call in a professional service, who will be able to advise you on how to proceed and make sure the work is carried out effectively and safely. Contact a roofing service to learn more about gutter replacement.
